Paul Medeiros has found and is working with a Massachusetts company that will collect these items at drop off sites set up throughout Woburn at various times throughout the year. This is an excellent opportunity to recycle these items at a minimal cost compared to the high cost associated with curbside appliance recycling programs and will also be a fundraiser for local organizations that will sponsor these events. Another good thing and possibly the best part of this program is that it is open to residents from any and all communities, not just Woburn, as well as any and all business entities. With your help these collections have raised over $50,000 dollars for local organizations in a little over 3 years!

So clean out those basements, attics, garages and warehouses and bring your items down!

This collection will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at the Shamrock School, 60 Green St in Woburn from 9 AM to 1 PM benefiting the White School PTO and their projects and programs. A portion of the proceeds from these collections will also be used for a scholarship fund for a Woburn High School graduating senior that will be continuing their education in the field of environmental education. (if you miss this event our next recycling will be on Saturday, June 19th at St. Barbara's Church on Cambridge Rd with the proceeds going to WREN)

Bring it to the event: For $1.00 each we will take the following: computers, electronic office equipment such as calculators, typewriters, fax/copy machines, printers, telephones, all consumer electronics (excluding televisions) such as cameras, video/audio/DVD/VCR, microwaves and sink disposal units.

 

Additionally, we will take and recycle or salvage the following in any quantity for a voluntary donation: computer parts and accessories, plugs, wires, drives, parts of computers, cell phones, video games as well as parts and accessories or plugs and wires, DVD’s, CD’s and VHS tapes.

They will recycle every and any battery from the tiny button batteries out of a hearing aid to the large auto batteries out of your car or truck. And this service is done completely "free of charge" and also every day of the week. So help out the environment, add the convenience of being able to do this any day of the week and save yourself some money on the disposal of those old car batteries. Stop by the Batteries Plus store at the "Four Corners"

Y.E.S./Community Service Hours available.  15 - 18 mature volunteers needed for Sunday, May 16th.  A 5K walk/race will be held at Horn Pond from 9am to 12 noon.  The walk is sponsoring the GBS CIDP Support Group of Middlesex County.  GBS ('Guillain-Barré Syndrome' ) and CIDP (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuritis) are auto-immune deficiency disorders that can cause paralysis.
 
Volunteers will help with the registration and hand out waters throughout the route.  At the end we will all work collectively to collect the debris left behind.

Joyce Middle School students were selected to participate in the Northeast Massachusetts District Junior Music Festival. After auditions of over 900 students from more than 90 public and private schools held in January, 450 students from grades 6 through 9 were selected to participate in this prestigious Massachusetts Music Educators Association event.

The program is offered by the MMEA as an enrichment opportunity providing a musical experience to talented young people. The students were selected to perform in the Junior District Concert Band, Orchestra, Boys Chorus and Girls Chorus.

They rehearsed with guest conductors and then performed in a concert at Lowell High School in Lowell, on Saturday, March 27.

The Woburn Public School system is looking for one or two volunteers from each of our schools to participate on a District Committee designed to suggest and select workshop topics pertinent to the interest of parents of school age children.  The committee will meet four times during the school year. We are seeking parent input on ways to provide high quality workshops at the District level.  Many wonderful things occur at the individual schools which we would like to share across the district.

For this year, two meetings will be held where parents can come together to offer suggestions/recommendations on ways the schools can provide parents with high interest workshops.  One meeting will be in the morning another in the evening.  Coffee will be served.  Please come and join me at one of the meetings – The meetings will be held in the Conference Room at the Joyce Middle School on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 9:00 AM.  and again on May 5, 2010 at 6:00 PM.

It seems that not a day goes by without reading about bullying, cyber-bullying, incidents of sexting and inappropriate use of social networking websites.  The internet offers almost limitless opportunities to gain knowledge and make contact with others. When used appropriately, it is a powerful and positive tool. However, school staff and parents need to be aware of the risks inherent in this technology.  Participants will learn about online issues impacting youth, such as social networking sites, predators, and sexting.

 

A member of the Middlesex DA’s office will do a two hour presentation on these important topics.  Effective prevention and intervention strategies for teachers, school staff and parents will be outlined and discussed.  The Middlesex District Attorney's Office Cyber Protection Program, created in 2007 by District Attorney Gerry Leone, will also be discussed.

Our children are being bombarded with powerful sexual messages everywhere throughout popular culture. Girls are being encouraged to objectify themselves and obsess about their sex appeal and appearance at absurdly young ages, while boys get the message that they should seek sex but avoid intimacy.
Jean Kilbourne, Ed.D., co-author of So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can do to Protect Their Children, will address these issues using illustrations and examples of the sexual images and messages targeted at our children. Her presentation will examine the harmful consequences of the sexualization of children and teens and will suggest strategies parents can employ to counter the attack.

The Joyce and Kennedy PTOs are pleased to sponsor  “ADOLESCENT PSYCHOLOGY-THE PARENT VERSION”, a Seminar by parenting expert Joani Geltman, MSW on Tuesday, February 2nd 7 – 9 PM at the Joyce Middle School Auditorium

Parents of 5th – 11th graders are invited to attend this free, entertaining, seminar hosted by the Joyce and Kennedy PTOs. Ms. Geltman will cover the topics of physical, cognitive, and social/emotional changes that occur in adolescence and how they affect relationships with parent and friends as well as school life. Among the focus points will be:

· Identifying your teen’s “lightening rod, imaginary audience, and personal fables.”

· Learning how to teen-proof your home.

· Learning how to teen-proof your relationship.

· Learning how to set appropriate limits so your teen will want to follow them.

· Developing effective tools for identifying and dealing with your teen’s experimentation with sex, drugs, and alcohol.

· Separating high expectations from unrealistic expectations and their respective consequences for your teen’s emotional well-being.

Geltman has been working as a therapist, parenting consultant, and coach for more than 30 years, and has given her seminar on “The Parent Version” at over 40 Middle Schools, High Schools, and community groups all over Massachusetts. As a member of the adjunct faculty of Curry College, and Lesley University, she designs curriculum and teaches Child and Adolescent development.

“I would like to help my audience understand that there is a context in which troublesome behavior occurs,” she said. “It’s not about bad kids or kids who are mean to their parents. It’s about developmental changes that are out of control because teen’s brains and bodies, their ability to understand, to conceptualize, to analyze, and to be introspective, are all brand new. Remember sitting in front of your new computer with all its new bells and whistles. You are excited about the potential of what you can do it, but overwhelmed with all its options. Welcome to Teen life!”

Joani’s special brand of “infotainment” using humor, storytelling, and sending home parents with a “goody bag” of helpful techniques make this a must-come evening.
