From Dr. Gary Reese, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum: The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) recently posted the K-12 Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics on their website at www.doe.mass.edu/candi/commoncore/. These standards represent the work of a variety of groups at the national level in an effort to develop consistency and rigor in academic standards across the states and to ensure students are exiting high school prepared to enter either college or the work force. DESE is encouraging input from our school community, including faculty, parents, and students. Please take some time over the next few weeks to review these standards and comment on them in the brief survey that is available on the website listed above. This survey will be available until July 2, 2010 and examines your opinion of the level of rigor of the common core standards in comparison to our current state frameworks. The purpose of this survey is to collect responses to inform the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, which will vote on whether to adopt the Common Core Standards at a Board meeting in July.

Saturday, May 15, 2010 - Shamrock School, 60 Greet Street, benefiting White School PTO Paul Medeiros has found and is working with a Massachusetts company that will collect these items at drop off sites set up throughout Woburn at various times throughout the year. This is an excellent opportunity to recycle these items at a minimal cost compared to the high cost associated with curbside appliance recycling programs and will also be a fundraiser for local organizations that will sponsor these events. Another good thing and possibly the best part of this program is that it is open to residents from any and all communities, not just Woburn, as well as any and all business entities. With your help these collections have raised over $50,000 dollars for local organizations in a little over 3 years! So clean out those basements, attics, garages and warehouses and bring your items down! This collection will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at the Shamrock School, 60 Green St in Woburn from 9 AM to 1 PM benefiting the White School PTO and their projects and programs. A portion of the proceeds from these collections will also be used for a scholarship fund for a Woburn High School graduating senior that will be continuing their education in the field of environmental education. (if you miss this event our next recycling will be on Saturday, June 19th at St. Barbara's Church on Cambridge Rd with the proceeds going to WREN)

Bring it to the event: For $1.00 each we will take the following: computers, electronic office equipment such as calculators, typewriters, fax/copy machines, printers, telephones, all consumer electronics (excluding televisions) such as cameras, video/audio/DVD/VCR, microwaves and sink disposal units.
Additionally, we will take and recycle or salvage the following in any quantity for a voluntary donation: computer parts and accessories, plugs, wires, drives, parts of computers, cell phones, video games as well as parts and accessories or plugs and wires, DVD’s, CD’s and VHS tapes.

And an added note.....
Batteries Plus has expanded their battery recycling program to include virtually any type of battery. They will recycle every and any battery from the tiny button batteries out of a hearing aid to the large auto batteries out of your car or truck. And this service is done completely "free of charge" and also every day of the week. So help out the environment, add the convenience of being able to do this any day of the week and save yourself some money on the disposal of those old car batteries. Stop by the Batteries Plus store at the "Four Corners" (please note regular alkaline batteries may be thrown out with the regular trash)

On May 4th, the Hurld 5th Grade will be running a clothing drive.
It’s spring!! Cleaning out those closets! Wondering what to do with outgrown, out of style clothing, soft toys, shoes, bedding or curtains? This is a great opportunity to clean out your closets, and support the Fifth Graders at the Hurld School. All proceeds will go towards 5th grade celebration activities – the yearbook, end of year field trips, etc. The Hurld Fifth Graders have partnered withScholars4 Dollars - a company that specializes in good quality second-hand clothing. The items are collected for REUSE in developing countries. This program pays donor organizations for quality second-hand clothing for adults and children, as well as bedding, curtains, soft toys, shoes, belts and handbags. It’s a great way for schools to raise money for what’s important. Plus, it feels good to be green. The program teaches students about the importance of recycling and re-using, and it makes a real impact by reducing the amount of textile waste in our landfills. To participate, fill ordinary kitchen or trash bags with the items. Drop your Bags off at the school during school hours on Monday, May 3rd or on Tuesday, May 4th before 10 AM . The Scholars4Dollars truck will pick up the bags on Tuesday, May 4th @10:30 a.m. The Fifth Graders at the Hurld thank you for your support. If you would like to participate and cannot drop off during these scheduled times, contact Penny Nichols-Cordero @ 781-935-0527 or email 20105thhurld@gmail.com to arrange for drop off |
